SAWA | Theatre for Solidarity

SAWA is Misriyati’s participatory theatre programme, using Theatre of the Oppressed, Forum Theatre, Playback Theatre, storytelling and creative practices to create spaces for dialogue, solidarity and collective action.

Building on Misriyati’s work with Egyptian and Sudanese youth in Aswan, SAWA explores identity, belonging, inclusion, conflict and coexistence, supporting participants to express their experiences, listen to different perspectives and imagine possibilities for change.

The programme includes

  • Theatre of the Oppressed and Forum Theatre
  • Playback Theatre and storytelling
  • Creative expression and collective creation
  • Dialogue across differences
  • Identity, belonging and inclusion
  • Solidarity and social cohesion
  • Conflict transformation
  • Youth-led initiatives and collective action

SAWA means “together.” At its heart is the belief that theatre can create spaces where people meet as equals, share experiences, encounter different perspectives and move from individual experiences towards collective understanding, solidarity and action.
